Hull Construction   PLANKING

In this section, the hull will be planked, or sheeted, with 3/32" balsa. Although this method of planking is relative easy, some care in preparation must be taken to avoid problems. Read through each sub-assembly in this section carefully before starting. Each sub-assembly will show you how to plank one side of the hull. These instructions will be repeated to plank the opposite side of the hull.

You will need the four sheets of 3/32" x 2-7/8" x 36" balsa that is packed in Bag Number Four (#4) to complete this sub-assembly.

Side Planking

Lay two of the balsa sheets flat on your building board and butt the long edges together, as shown. Remove any gaps in the joint between the sheets by sanding the high spots on the edges with a sanding block When you are finished, the two sheets should fit tightly together along the length of the joint.

Hold the two balsa sheets tightly together along the joint with a piece of masking tape, as shown.

FAIRING the Cockpit Deck

In this sub-assembly, the cockpit deck halves will be faired to their final shape. This can be done very easily before the planking is applied and will allow the cockpit deck halves to slip into place after the boat is painted.

You will need the two cockpit deck halves to complete this sub-assembly.

After fairing the sides of the chine logs, use a sanding block to sand the tops flush with the subdeck, as shown

Position the cockpit deck halves on the sub-deck.
Align their mating edges over the seam in the subdeck, as shown in steps #59 and #60. Pin them to the sub-deck. Do not glue the cockpit deck in place at this time.

Using a plane and sanding block, trim the outside edges of the cockpit deck flush with the outside edges of the chine logs, as shown.

Insert a 5/32" drill bit into the hole for the rudder post in the keel and drill through the cockpit deck.
