Hull Construction

Roger's Notes: Smoothing the edges of the parts in this manner will aid the CA in bonding the parts together. Remember, you only want to smooth the edges of the parts, only removing the burrs.  Do NOT change the profile of the part.

Sand the mating edges of the deck and sub-deck halves so that the parts fit together with no gaps. Lay a piece of plastic wrap, slightly longer than the deck, on the building board, then, lay the parts on the building board and join them with Slow CA. Be careful to align the ends of these parts so they are flush.

Cut 1/4" into both ends of the scored lines on the deck with an X-Acto®· knife, as shown, This will transfer the position of the scored lines to the opposite side of the deck.

Cut through the scored lines on each cockpit deck half and remove the wood, This wood will be used as the cockpit deck hatch cover.

Sand the mating edges of the cockpit deck and the cockpit deck hatch so the mating edges of these parts fit together with no gaps.  Lay the hatch parts ONLY flat on the building board and join the hatch parts together so that they are flush.

Roger's Notes: Do NOT join the deck halves together until told to do so later in construction.

KEEL

Use a sanding block to sand the keel filler strip and all of the keel joints flush and smooth.

step.gif (1063 bytes)
Remove the keel from the building board.  Turn it over and repeat instructions #9 and #10 to install the remaining piece of filler strip in the opposite side of the keel.

Frames and Decks

You will need the parts illustrated in your construction manual to complete this sub-assembly. The triangle stock and 1/8" square basswood are in Bag Number Two (#2). Two of the die-cut sheets are in the bottom of the box. All of the other parts are in Bag Number Three (#3).

step.gif (1063 bytes)
Carefully remove the die-cut sheets from Bag Number Three (#3). Using the illustrations above, lightly mark the part names and numbers on all of the parts.

Roger's Notes: Later in construction, the parts will be referred to by their names & numbers.

step.gif (1063 bytes)
Remove only those parts from the die-cut sheets that are shaded in the illustrations (page 13). Place all of the remaining parts back into Bag Number Three (#3). They will not be needed at this time.

Main Deck

Roger's Notes: The deck and cockpit deck have scored lines on them. Do not cut through these lines yet! They are there to indicate the hatches that will be cut out later in the construction. Also, save the scrap from the die-cut sheets. It will be needed to cut braces for some of the parts.

Using a sanding block, very lightly sand the edges of all of the die-cut parts to remove any burrs or rough spots, Hold the sanding block at a 90· angle while doing this.
